Virgin Australia - Brachycephalic Breeds

If your pet is classified as any of the below breeds or is considered a Brachycephalic breed, it will be able to fly on Virgin Airlines under a BOAS. This must be completed by an AVA vet within 7 days of your pets departure, and are restricted to certain ports.

Virgin Australia does transport brachycephalic breeds and brachycephalic cross-breeds, subject to strict protocols. The requirements below apply to every brachy and brachy-cross booking, without exception.

All non brachy breeds can fly at 8 weeks of age. If the pet is a brachy breed, they must be 12 weeks of age to fly.

  1. BOAS Veterinary Clearance – Mandatory
A BOAS Veterinary Assessment Form must be completed within 60 days of travel. This must be completed by an Australian-registered veterinarian only. Bookings cannot proceed without this document.
  2. Mandatory Meet & Greet Services
Meet & Greet is required at both lodgement and release, for every brachycephalic booking flown with Virgin. There are no exceptions to this.
  3. Flight Restrictions – One Sector Per Day
Virgin permits only one flight sector per day for brachycephalic pets. Multi-sector (indirect) itineraries are not permitted for brachys on Virgin, direct flights only.
  4. Approved Departure Times
Flights must depart before 9:00am or after 6:00pm. No time restrictions apply between 1 May and 31 August.

If a morning departure is selected, there must be two flight options available before 9:00am, so a same-day alternative is available if the first flight is disrupted. If two valid morning options aren't available, Qantas must be quoted and booked instead, in line with Departure Pets policy to ensure a back-up option is always in place.
